On completion of an extensive and costly remediation process, by National Grid PLC, this abandoned and long neglected area has been re-born as a modest but essential part of our community’s contribution to wildlife preservation.
The Gasworks Reserve, which features a picnic area and information installation on the site of one of the original gasometers, was officially opened in the Autumn of 2015.
The project represented a significant investment on the part of National Grid, who transferred freehold ownership of the site, on completion, to Aberdovey Community Council. On behalf of our community we say a big thank you to National Grid for their generosity and also to Natural Resources Wales for their invaluable help as advisers.
Since its opening in 2015, access to the gasworks was further improved with the installation of a footpath alongside the main road opposite Trefeddian Terrace, and steps down, courtesy of Gwynedd Council Highways.
The site provides essential cover for many species of flora, fauna and insect life, and of special interest – otters and adders. If you visit with your children and dog please be aware that adders are venomous snakes, but are also very shy, their first instinct to flee on being disturbed. However, please do keep your dog on a lead – this will not only help prevent a potentially fatal adder bite to your pet, but also prevent it disturbing our otters.
The project was recognised, in 2019, at the NICOLE environment conference in Lyon, France, as representing excellence in the field of sustainable and novel remediation development. An honour, and recognition of Aberdovey’s commitment to conservation of its environment.
